Militants Down Egyptian Helicopter, Killing 5 Soldiers

CAIRO — Islamist militants shot down an Egyptian military helicopter in the Sinai Peninsula with a surface-to-air missile over the weekend, raising new alarms about the terrorist insurgency that developed there in response to the military takeover last summer.

The attack — described by witnesses, documented in a video released by the militants, and confirmed by three people briefed on the Egyptian government’s investigation — validated longstanding fears that such weapons would spill into Egypt and beyond after the Libyan civil war tore open Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s fearsome arsenals.

Known as manpads, for man-portable air defense systems, the missiles can bring down commercial airliners if they are flying at low altitude, as during takeoff and landing. They also strengthen Sinai-based militants’ hand against the Egyptian Army, and there is concern that the militants might seek to use the missiles on the Egyptian mainland, where terrorist attacks have become more frequent. On Saturday, four bombings killed six people in greater Cairo.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, a militant group based in Sinai that has claimed responsibility for an escalating series of attacks on police and soldiers, said in a statement posted on jihadist websites that it had succeeded in “downing a military helicopter with a surface-to-air missile and killing its entire crew in the area around the city of Sheikh Zuweid” in North Sinai, near the border with Gaza. The group, which quotes Al Qaeda leaders in its online video statements, said it had targeted the aircraft “in an area clear of residents to preserve the lives of Muslims.”

Witnesses said they had seen on Saturday “a strange body” flying toward the helicopter, which then burned in the air for a time before falling. The flames were visible from nearby towns. The helicopter landed near El Shollaq, a small town just south of Sheikh Zuweid, and continued to burn for hours.

Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis released a video on Sunday night that appeared to show one of its fighters firing the missile, and the burning aircraft falling from the sky.

All five soldiers in the helicopter were killed, security officials said.

Conjoined Grey whales washed up in Mexico

Conjoined grey whale twins were found dead on Monday (Jan 6th, '14), in a Mexican lagoon, according to footage released by the Mexican government.

The twins were found in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon in the northwestern state of Baja California Sur, which opens out into the Pacific Ocean.
Footage released by Mexico's National Natural Protected Areas Commission (CONANP) shows the twin whales, conjoined at the belly, washed up on a beach by the lagoon.

"At least four people were injured and cars were swept away by an enormous wave that crashed onto the coast of Porto in Portugal.Spectators were caught off guard as they filmed dramatic waves crashing against a lighthouse at the mouth of the Douro river in Porto.

As a huge wave unexpectedly came crashing over the seafront wall, bystanders and their cars were suddenly engulfed in the swell.

The amateur footage shows panicked onlookers running from the sea, shouting "keep running!", as water continues to flood in over the street.

Cars were dragged and damaged and according to local media four people suffered abrasions as a result of the wave."
