SUPYAN MINKAILOVICH ABDUELLAYEV was the second most important person after Doku Umarov in the Northern Caucasus islamist movement.
Abduallayev was Umarov’s “naib” (deputy) and personally bore the title of “sheikh” and sometimes even “emir” of the virtual state of the “Emirate of Northern Caucasus” – a Wahhabi extremists’ self-proclaimed non-existing country with a population counting about 200 insurgents.
Being a school-teacher in Soviet times Abdullayev later turned first to Islam, then radical Islam in the late 80s that later led him to joining various Chechen militant separatist organizations in the early 90s.
Abdullayev took part in the Chechen Civil War (1991 – 1994), helping the fascist regime of Djohar Dudayev to crush moderate and democratic organizations within the Chechen society.
After the re-organization of the USSR into the CIS the international islamist organizations started pouring money into the newborn Chechen Republic of Ichkeriya and a lot of “schools of Islam” opened their doors to the local population offering free Islamic religious courses which veiled fundamentalistic teaching and jihadi philosophy.
From 1991 to 1994 Abdullayev worked as director of the Islamic school of al-Risalah in Grozny.

Abdullayev was an active separatist insurgent during the First Chechen War (1994 – 1996) as a deputy-commander of the “Islamic battalion” and took part in the Operation “Jihad” by Chechen separatists and international islamist mercenaries in August 1996 which became a sort of Tet Offensive for the Russian and pro-Russian Chechen forces in Chechnya who withdraw later that year.
In that later operation Abdullayev was more a commander than a regular fighter among the extremists.
After the First Chechen War the “President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria” Aslan Maskhadov appointed Abdullayev as a Deputy-Minister for Morale within the “Ministry for National Shariah Security” – a ridiculous name for an official state institution in the separatist Chechen republic of Ichkeriya led by Maskhadov with the task to islamize and radicalize the religious views of Moslems on the territory of “Ichkeriya” (a separatist name for Chechnya).
Here it worth mentioning that for some “unknown reason” the “Western media” regarded Maskhadov as a “legitimate Chechen head of state” and “moderate politician”.
When Russian troops re-entered Chechnya in fall 1999 to stop the islamist bloody orgy Abdullayev became deputy commander and later commander of the “Islamic brigade “Jundullah””.
The name for the brigade – “Jundullah” – which means “Warriors of Allah”, didn’t seem to be chosen just so for there exist two extremist islamist organizations in the world having the same name:
1) “Jundullah” in Iran – an extremist Sunni organization fighting against the Iranian state with its mostly Shiite population;
2) “Jundullah” in Pakistan – an extremist Islamic organization fighting for Shariah order and establishing of a theocratic state in Pakistan.
In this context, it is important to mention that both of these organizations, especially the one in Iran, received and are receiving financial and military help from the USA, UK, Sweden, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
During the Second Chechen War, Abdullayev entered the ranks of the resistance in the very beginning, started out as a leader of a jamaat and eventually became the commander of a front and a member of the Maskhadov's government, racing the level of Brigadier General
In 2002 Maskhadov personally made Abdullayev a member of the Military Committee of the State Defense Committee of the Supreme Military Madjilisul Shura (Arab – “Consultative Assembly”) of the United Mujahidin Forces of Caucasus - a terrorist islamist organization created in 2001 (the year the Russian Armed Forces eventually crushed the open military resistance in Chechnya and only guerilla tactics were left for insurgents) and initially uniting 40 Chechen and Arab islamist warlords in Chechnya to coordinate the further Jihad against Christian Russia.
The first president of the Supreme Military Madjilisul Shura of United Mujahidin Forces of Caucasus was Shamil Basayev (killed by Russians in 2006) who was Chechen and therefore responsible for the local activities, while Samir Saleh Abdullah Al-Suwailem, better known as “Khattab”, a Saudi Arab, was Basayev’s deputy and responsible for financing of Chechen insurgents from abroad and weapons supply.
Later Maskhadov appointed Abdullayev Minister of Finance of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeriya. Thus, Abdullayev became the controller of all the money flows from Saudi-Arabia and international islamist organizations to Chechnya to finance the islamist insurgency.
A former teacher, Supyan Abdullayev was a skilled psychologist and was famous for knowing how to work with young people to recruit them as future islamist insurgents or suicide-bombers.
This appointement of Abdullayev to the position of the Vice-President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeriya (vacant since the killing of Shamil Basayev by Russians) on March 19, 2007, by the President of Chechen Republic of Ichkeriya Doku Umarov was announaced on a UK BASED Chechen separatist website and you can find it here:

Abdullayev was considered the most senior figure after Umarov in the ranks of the islamist Caucasian Emirate and his one possible successor.
Supyan Abdullayev developed into one of the most senior ranking field commanders of the Caucasus Emirate, and the chief ideologue of the whole movement. His was named as Doku Umarov's “deputy Emir”.
Islamists nicknamed Abdullayev “Red-Haired Supyan”. Here it should be said that half a millennium ago Chechens were blonde and red-haired but due to intensive contacts with Arabs and Turks the dominant hair colour of today’s Chechens is dark. However, recessive genes sometimes come to the surface and Chechens are born blonde and red-haired which in the times of Chechen nationalism and fundamentalism became an extremely popular topic – like in Germany of the 1930s, Chechen leaders and politicians started speaking of the “pure Chechen blood” and the “real roots” of the nation. Due to this, blonde and red hair became a reason for special pride for the parents and those who had them and Abdullayev, being a separatist leader, owed his popularity partially to the colour of his hair, too.
Russians designated him as “Red-Haired Dwarf” pointing at Abdullayev being very short in size.
Supyan Minkailovich Abdullayev, aged 54, was killed in a Russian air-strike in spring 2011.
