UFO or Mysterious Fireball over Flagler Beach and Saigon, Vietman Monday, July 25, 2011 Update E.L.E.nin NEWS.
FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. --Dozens of people claimed to see a ball of fire fall from the sky near the Flagler Beach Pier around 11 o-clock.
Some witnesses believe it was a Chinese Lantern that set off. Others believe it could be a UFO.
"They called me and notified they saw a large flash from the sky. About 25 people have told one of the officers," Flagler Beach Police Chief Dan Cody said.
Someone even snapped a photograph of it and gave it to Greg Starr.
"My friend had a picture of the fireball on Facebook," Starr told Action News. "I don't think that's a Chinese Lantern, though."
In the hours prior to the fireball sighting, the Coast Guard had been sending out alerts over the radio about a possible downed plane in the ocean, but at the time, nothing had been found.
The Jacksonville Coast Guard station responded shortly before 11 p.m., at about the same time of the fireball sighting.
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office spoke with possible witnesses at Finn's Restaurant in Flagler Beach.
"We pretty much have a 360 degree view of what's going on," General Manager Brant Tarpley said.
The sheriff's office says the incident ended at 1:30 a.m., but the Coast Guard remained offshore, searching with boats and a helicopter.
Crews looked for signs of wreckage, but turned up with negative results. The FAA says no planes were in the area at the time, and there have been no reports of any missing planes.
At this point, all search efforts have been suspended and the mystery remains unsolved.
