NHK World News ---- Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai
Description -- Iran has opened a new Revolutionary Guards naval base near the strategic Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.
This is an apparent move to check the US, Europe and Gulf nations.
The Revolutionary Guards said it inaugurated the new naval base on Sunday at the southern port of Bandar Lengeh. It also announced the deployment of missile and warship units there.
The new base is located near the oil shipping route and disputed 3 islands that have been controlled by Iran for at least 40 years. The islands are also claimed by the United Arab Emirates.
At Sunday's inauguration ceremony, Revolutionary Guards Commander Mohammad Ali Jafari said the new base covers the waters that are playing an extremely important role in Iran's strategic defense.
He said that in the future the base will likely host the biggest unit of the Revolutionary Guards.
Another general said Iran controls the disputed 3 islands, the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters.
Iran's leaders have threatened to block the critical oil shipping route due to deepening international tensions over its nuclear program.
Fueling the fear of additional tensions, Iran is showing signs of boosting its naval power.
