Syrian regime launches Scud missiles at rebels
Syrian forces have fired at least four Scud against rebels inside Syria, US and NATO officials said on Wednesday, describing the move as an escalation of the country's 20-month civil war by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's embattled regime.
The announcement comes one day after the US said it would formally recognize the Syrian opposition coalition as the country's legitimate representative. The opposition has been recognized by more than 100 countries, including Turkey, France and the UK.
It was not immediately clear why forces loyal to Bashar used the large, highly inaccurate missiles against the rebels, when air strikes or artillery would have been more effective against the opposition's small, mobile rebel bands.
