Yet Another Estimate of When Iran Will Have the Bomb
by Kevin Jon Heller
McClatchy reports that Israel now believes Iran will not be able to produce a nuclear weapon until 2015 or 2016. That is progress of a sort; Netanyahu had previously been claiming that Iran would have the bomb no later than late summer 2013 — around six months from now. But Israel is still insisting that Iran is only two or three years away from nuclear capability, so I think it is useful to recall and update the timeline I mentioned early last year of breathless Israeli and Western claims about Iran's nuclear program: 1984: West German intelligence sources claim that Iran's production of a bomb "is entering its final stages." US Senator Alan Cranston claims Iran is seven years away from making a weapon. 1992: Israeli parliamentarian Benjamin Netanyahu tells the Knesset that Iran is 3 to 5 years from being able to produce a nuclear weapon. 1995: The New York Times reports that US and Israeli officials fear "Iran is much closer to producing nuclear weapons than previously thought" -- less than five years away. Netanyahu claims the time frame is three to five years. 1996: Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres claims Iran will have nuclear weapons in four years. 1998: Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld claims Iran could build an ICBM capable of reaching the US within five years. 1999: An Israeli military official claims that Iran will have a nuclear weapon within five years. 2001: The Israeli Minister of Defence claims that Iran will be ready to launch a nuclear weapon in less than four years. 2002: The CIA warns that the danger of nuclear weapons from Iran is higher than during the Cold War, because its missile capability has grown more quickly than expected since 2000 -- putting it on par with North Korea. 2003: A high-ranking Israeli military officer tells the Knesset that Iran will have the bomb by 2005 — 17 months away. 2006: A State Department official claims that Iran may be capable of building a nuclear weapon in 16 days. 2008: An Israeli general tells the Cabinet that Iran is "half-way" to enriching enough uranium to build a nuclear weapon and will have a working weapon no later than the end of 2010. 2009: Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak estimates that Iran is 6-18 months away from building an operative nuclear weapon. 2010: Israeli decision-makers believe that Iran is at most 1-3 years away from being able to assemble a nuclear weapon. 2011: An IAEA report indicates that Iran could build a nuclear weapon within months. 2013: Israeli intelligence officials claim that Iran could have the bomb by 2015 or 2016.
The McClatchy articles quotes an Israeli intelligence officer as asking "Did we cry wolf too early?" That's amusing: Israel (and the West) have been crying wolf over Iran's nuclear capability for nearly three decades.

North Korea wants freedom from US empire
An analyst tells Press TV that North Korea's dedication to remaining independent of the US empire is the main reason of conflict between Washington and Pyongyang.
North Korea has declared that it is in a 'state of war' with South Korea, warning that any provocation by Seoul and Washington will trigger an all-out nuclear war. Pyongyang also warned that if Washington and Seoul launched a preemptive attack, the conflict would "not be limited to a local war, but develop into an all-out war, a nuclear war." The United States has reacted to the warning, calling it "unconstructive" while taking it "seriously."
Press TV has conducted an interview with Dr. Kevin Barrett, author and political commentator from Madison, to shed light on the issue of tension at the Korean Peninsula.

Iran will raze Tel Aviv to ground if Israel attacks: Ayatollah Khamenei
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says Iran will raze Tel Aviv to the ground if Israel launches a military strike against the Islamic Republic.

DUBAI - Iran's most powerful authority said the Islamic Republic would destroy the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa if Israel launched a military attack against it.
"At times the officials of the Zionist regime (Israel) threaten to launch a military invasion but they themselves know that if they make the slightest mistake the Islamic Republic will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during an address, broadcast live on state television on 3-21-13

To say that the pundits have low expectations for President Barack Obama's trip to Israel and Jordan this week would be putting it mildly. Most expect a series of photo ops, but no serious progress on the three major issues: the Iran nuclear threat, the implosion of Syria, and the moribund Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
"It is hard for me to recall a less-anticipated trip to Israel by an American president," noted Thomas L. Friedman in his recent column in the New York Times. "But there is a message in that empty bottle: Little is expected from this trip — not only because little is possible, but because, from a narrow U.S. point of view, little is necessary."
The pundits are wrong. Much is at stake in the Mideast.
Actually, much is necessary. The president needs to "re-set" U.S.-Israeli relations in a positive way after a contentious relationship with Israeli PM Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the first term. But that is the just the beginning.
There are three critical questions the president needs to answer on this trip:
Have diplomacy, sanctions and covert operations failed to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons?
If so, will President Obama order airstrikes against Iran, or give Israel the green light to hit Iran's nuclear sites since other measures have failed?
If not, why not?
Unfortunately, the administration has sent mixed messages in recent days.
On March 4, Vice President Joe Biden told the AIPAC Policy Conference the president is committed to preventing Iran from getting the bomb, and pointedly noted that the window is closing for diplomacy and sanctions work.
Let me make clear what that commitment is: It is to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, said Biden. Period. End of discussion. Prevent — not contain —prevent....Big nations can't bluff....And President Barack Obama is not bluffing.
The next day, however, Secretary of State John Kerry sent different signals. He confirmed that Iran is getting closer to having nuclear weapons. He conceded that "lines have been drawn before and they've been passed. That's why the president has been so definitive this time." But Kerry did not echo Biden's hard line. Rather, he said the president wants to "avoid any consideration of any kind of military action."
That same day, U.S. CENTCOM commander General James Mattis testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee. He was asked, "In your professional opinion, are the current diplomatic and economic efforts to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons capability -- are they working?" His answer was blunt. "No, sir." Then he said he was working on "other options" for the President.
Last week, President Obama was interviewed by Israel's Channel 2. He said there is still "a year or so" until Iran builds an operational nuclear bomb.
That confused the picture even more.
Was the president indicating time is running out and that military action might need to be taken soon, or that there is still plenty of time to keep trying diplomacy and sanctions?
Mr. Netanyahu famously told the U.N. General Assembly last fall that the "red line" -- the point at which Israel would be forced to launch preemptive strikes or risk allowing Tehran to get The Bomb -- would be reached by spring or summer 2013. Today, senior Israeli officials confirm the red line is approaching.
"Iran's nuclear program is advancing slower then they planned, but it is moving," says Major General Aviv Kochavi, director of Israeli military intelligence. "At their current pace of enrichment of 14 kilograms of uranium per month, Iran would be able to manufacture five to six nuclear bombs, if the order is given."
The problem, noted Kochavi, is that the military option that world leaders say is "on the table" is not being taken seriously by Tehran. "Iran does not see a high likelihood of an attack on its nuclear facilities by the international community," he noted at a recent security conference in Israel.
Netanyahu is ready to launch a massive preemptive military strike soon, and alone, if need be. His new government is now in place. This includes new Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon, a former chief of staff of the Israeli Defense Forces.
Chemical weapons use in Syria is lose-lose for Assad
UN chief Ban Ki Moon has pledged to send a group of independent experts to Syria to investigate an alleged chemical attack near the northern city of Aleppo. Both the government and the opposition have called for the probe after trading accusations as to who was behind the assault, which killed up to 31 people on Tuesday.

'West arming Wahhabi militants in Syria'
The West analyze UN and NGO reports on Syria to build a false pretence of arming Wahhabi militants to fight the Assad regime, an analyst says.
In the background to this, the UN High Commissioner for refugees has warned that the number of displaced Syrians may double or even triple by end of this year if the unrest does not cease. The UN's refugee chief Antonio Guterres said on Sunday that if there is no political solution to the conflict in Syria the number of displaced Syrians would reach two or even three million by the end of 2013.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Afshin Rattansi, an author and journalist from London, to further discuss the issue.

'Israel too weak to wage war on Lebanon'
An analyst says that the Zionist regime is militarily too weak to be able to handle the consequences of waging a war on Lebanon and that Gantz's war rhetoric is to nothing but to create an atmosphere of threat among the Zionist settlers in order for Netanyahu to get the majority in the Knesset.
The comment comes as Israel's armed forces chief of staff Benny Gantz has threatened that Tel Aviv will strike Lebanese infrastructure if Hezbollah resistance movement attacks the Zionist regime. In a sharply worded warning to Hezbollah, Gantz said on Monday that Lebanon will also pay in the next Israel-Hezbollah conflict, Times of Israel reported.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Director of the Center for Middle East Studies, Hisham Jaber, in the Lebanese capital city of Beirut to further discuss the issue.

Chasing the Dragon: 'China will overtake US as world's largest economy'
Beijing's been rapidly growing over the last two decades - at a speed which has brought it close to the traditionally major economies - including the US and even allowed it to surpass Europe's powerhouse, Germany. That's slowed down a bit recently but, China's still expected to overtake the US as the world's biggest economy in 2017. The economic rivalry comes amid the battle for influence in Asia between the two.

Turkish government, opposition go head to head over Syria crisis
The Turkish Government and the main Turkish opposition party the Republican people's party went head to head, in Thursdays parliament session. The fight which almost turned violent started when main opposition Republican People's Party deputy ـmit zgümüs took the floor to argue that the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmad Davutoglu had made a misjudgment on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's fate.
The Republican people's party which is also known as CHP also claimed that the accusations made by Ankara were all lies. Ankara claims the Syrian government is massacring its own people. The CHP representative said the lies being told about the Syrian government are the same as the lies that were used by the U-S to invade Iraq. The U-S claimed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction which latter turned out to be false.
The fight like the one that took place in Turkey's parliament on Thursday, reflects the growing divide between the Turkish government and the country's main opposition C-H-P over the Syrian crisis. Many believe this is an example of the deepening rift in Turkish public opinion. Many say if the crisis in Syria does not end soon, more fights like this one are likely to occur.

Iranian Navy Fleet Docks in China's Southern Port
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Navy's 24th flotilla of warships docked in China's Southern port city of Zhangjigang as part of its mission to convey Iran's message of peace and friendship to the East Asian states.
Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Navy for Operations Admiral Siyavash Jarreh announced that the Navy's 24th fleet of warship, comprised of Khark chopper carrier and Sabalan destroyer, docked in Zhangjigang this morning after a 13,000-kilometer voyage in 40 days.
The commander said that during its voyage the Iranian warships traced and detected 1,180 trade and oil vessels and monitored the moves of over 120 military units with the help of their optical and electronic equipment.
He added that the visit was aimed at consolidating Iran's relations with China and conveying a message of peace and friendship to Beijing and other regional states.
Late in February, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari announced that Iranian warships will dock in Sri Lanka's capital city of Colombo on its way back home from a mission in Southeast Asia.
"The flotilla will dock in Sri Lanka's Colombo on his way back to the Gulf of Aden," Sayyari said at the time.

Iran booming petro-chemical industry despite sanctions
Future expansion of Iran's petrochemical products. Despite Western sanctions against Iran's oil industry, the country is planning to expand its petrochemical industry, the managing director of the National Iranian Petrochemical Company (NIPC) told Press TV. A conference has been held in Tehran discussing Iran's booming petrochemical industry. Bayat also discussed Iran's Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan of 2010-2015.
In the fiscal year of 2011 Iran exported around 18 million tons of petrochemical and polymer products, worth just over 14 billion dollars, to more than 60 countries. This past year exports dropped as domestic consumption grew by 20 percent. Meanwhile, due to unilateral sanctions by the US and some of its allies against Iran's oil industry, the country is increasing foreign direct investment. Iran has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical products over the past few years. The National Iranian Petrochemical Company (NIPC) has become the second largest producer and exporter of petrochemicals in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia.

18+ Syria - Assad Suffers Heavy Casualties in Khalidiya as Rebels Repel Regime Invaders 3-3-13
SRCC News Update for Saturday March 2, 2013
Summary of Events
Rebel fighters made one of their biggest victories in Aleppo after seizing full control of the police academy and detaining dozens of regime soldiers in the suburb of Khan Asal after several months of continuous fighting. Meanwhile, the rebels shot down a helicopter gunship as they continued their attack on the Minnegh airbase.
In Hama, the rebels destroyed the towering Tal Ottoman army base in the ancient town of Madiq Fortress, a base that have always been a major source of artillery and tanks shelling on the surrounding towns and villages.
Another rare incident also took place near Deir Azzour when the rebels set dozens of detainees free as they ambushed a convoy on the Deir Azzour-Damascus road which the regime seems to have lost control of due to the continued rebel attacks.
Jabhat al-Nusra-led fighters launched an all-out offensive on the central prison of Raqa and stormed the checkpoints of Forousiya and Meshlab as well as the Hagana army base in the city as they used tanks and heavy artillery to bombard the base of the army's 17th division in its suburb. The clashes left at least eight rebel fighters, including the Amir of Jabhat al-Nusra in Raqa, Abu Abdullah al-Gharib, and More than 14 regime soldiers dead.
The two-year Syrian conflict has taken a dangerous turn when Iraqi armed forces bombarded rebels' positions in the Syrian town of Yaroubiya to support the embattled Syrian forces that fled into the Iraqi territory, following a series of advances made by the rebels. Syrian fighter jets violated the Iraqi airspace to carry out airstrikes on rebels' positions near the Yaroubiya border post as Iraqi fighter jets were also seen flying nearby.
Meanwhile, regime forces continued their attacks on opposition-held areas across the country, shelling more than 365 locations, 21 of which were pounded with fighter jets while two others were hit by Scud-type missiles.
Today's death toll reached more than 164. Regime forces and loyalist militiamen killed at least 115 people, including ten women, nine children and 36 rebel fighters, whereas the rebels killed more than 49 soldiers and militiamen.
At least 35 people were killed in Damascus and its suburbs, eight of whom died as a result of the heavy fighting and shelling that took place in the eastern neighborhood of Jobar. Regime indiscriminate shelling also left at least ten people dead in the neighborhoods of Sheikh Akhdar and Marjeh in Aleppo city, and in its provincial town of Kafernaha in addition to four in the Homs suburb of Dara Kabeera, and two in each of Hatleh village in Deir Azzour and the town of Tal Hameis in Hasaka.
Unemployment Rate in Syria increased to 34.9% by the end of year 2012 from %14.9 in December 2011, thus, increasing the list of impoverished Syrians by six million, according to a research study issued by the Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies.

'US drifting away from blind allegiance to Israel'
Israel could become the first-ever nation to enjoy the official status of America's "major strategic ally". This, among other things, could mean the U.S. would be obliged to support any potential Israeli offensive against Iran. The proposed legislation is to be discussed at the annual American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee gathering about to kick-off in Washington. Despite the significance of such a move, neither of the leaders of the two countries are attending. Geopolitical analyst Patrick Henningsen says this could be a sign the Israeli lobby is losing influence.

Russia, France vow to preseve sovereignty of syria
Russia and France say they share the same goal in finding a solution to the Syrian crisis. During a meeting in Moscow on Thursday, Vladimir Putin and Francois Hollande said they wanted to preserve the sovereignty of Syria. However, there is a divide in how Russia and France want to resolve the situation in Syria. Russia has long insisted that Syrians should decide their own fate, while France favors Syria without Bashar al-Assad.

'Iran must take legal action against West over media bans'
An analyst says the Islamic Republic should pursue legal methods and file law suits against the illegal dropping of Iranian media based on European constitutions' own laws used to promote 'freedom of speech.' The comment comes as in recent months; Eutelsat's Israeli-French CEO Michel De Rosen has stepped up his restrictive campaign by appealing to major satellite providers in Europe and Asia to silence Iranian media. The campaign has revealed the true face of the West, which preaches respect for human rights and free speech but practices the opposite. On February 20, the Arab satellite provider Gulfsat banned Iranian channels iFilm and Al-Kawthar under direct pressure from Eutelsat. The encroachment upon freedom of speech targeting movie channel, iFilm, and Iran's Arabic-language Al-Kawthar came one day after Eutelsat asked Nilesat to take Iran's English-language news channel Press TV off the air. Press TV has conducted an interview with Beirut-based political analyst Intifad Qanbar to further discuss the issue.
