Muslim street prayers in China














These pictures were taken in Xining, the capital city of China's Qinghai Province. Every Fraidy, ethnic Hui Muslim street prayers occupy major roads in the city to pray. Even non-Muslim resident areas are routinely blocked. Growing anger in the city has reportedly led to a few conflicts between prayers and store owners.

Muslims Hui and Chinese Han had a bloody religious war, namely Dungan revolt, back in 19th century in Qinghai and its neighbouring provinces. More than 4 millions civilians were killed in that conflict. In 1960s, Chinese Communist Party banned Islam belief, closed all mosques and forced Muslims to raise swines and eat pork. After Mao's death in 1976, Islam religious activities became legal. According to 2010 census, around 1 million Hui Muslim people live in Qinghai provinice, accounting for 35% of total population.
